I feel like an important element is being overlooked: traditional gender roles within families. Many women are consciously opting out of partnership and motherhood because inequality persists inside the nuclear family.

In many European countries, women work more total hours when unpaid labor such as childcare, elder care, and household tasks are included. They also face a “motherhood penalty,” losing income and long-term financial security, while men’s financial position often remains stable.

Raising the status of families will not solve this. The issue is not that children are undervalued. Women are undervalued. Many women want motherhood, but not at the expense of their autonomy, financial stability, and wellbeing.

South Korea too I believe has a shrinking population and is facing a demographic emergency.
